The cult of Our Lady Acheropita began in the town of Rossano in Calabria, Italy. In this city, in a small cave at the end of the sixth century, lived a hermit saint Ephrem, very devoted to the Virgin Mary.
It is said that in 580, Captain Mauricio, cleared by the winds reached a Calabrian village in present Rossano.
The monk Ephrem came to greet him and said, "It was not the winds that led you here, but Our Lady, for you-appointed emperor once you build him a temple."
In 582, Maurice was crowned emperor of the region of Macedonia, which covered part of the territories that are now Greece and Italy.
In 590, the emperor got Mauritius, Emperor of Constantinople, to transform released a cave shrine dedicated to Our Lady.
Governor Philippicus, brother of the emperor, trying to please the king, brought from Byzantium competent artists to paint a picture of the Virgin Mary in the bottom of the temple.

He reported what happened, the next morning, the governor went to the church and to his surprise and everyone warned puzzled that the woman was painted at the bottom of the inner wall of the temple, forming a beautiful image of Our Lady, with similar strokes Byzantine icons painted in the exact place where artists, in vain, tried to draw the image.

The news spread throughout the city. The faithful began to arrive at the place of miracle and cheering in tears and songs of praise: "Acheropita! Acheropita "which means" the picture has not been painted by human hands "!

The church is world famous for an ancient image of the Madonna acheropita ("Virgin not made by human hands"), currently located in the Diocesan Museum, probably dating from between 580 and the first half of the eighth century.
In 1879, he was discovered in the sacristy the famous Codex Rossanensis. It is a parchment manuscript of the gospels of Matthew and Mark, written in silver on parchment dyed purple, and is one of the oldest known illustrated Gospels.
