Madonna del Carmine The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a religious event held annually in civil and Palmi , July 16 (an event dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine ) and November 16 (the anniversary of the miracle of the earthquake of 1894 ). The two festivals, celebrated in the ' sanctuary of the same name , are organized by the Carmelite Fathers of the sanctuary itself and the "Noble congregation of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel" . The origins of the two parties Palmi, in honor of the Madonna del Carmine, dating back to the seventeenth century for the celebrations of 16 July [1] and in 1895 [2] to those of 16 November.

History

The first news about the celebration in Palmi, 16 July, a festival dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine , dating from the late seventeenth century , as reported by the Land Registry onciario time [3] . To kick started the festivities was the Noble congregation of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel , which was taken over to the Carmelite Fathers in the management of the church [4] .
In the mid- nineteenth century , confirmed the existence of a feast dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, on 16 July, in the "church of the same title" [5] .

From 16 November 1895 , the first anniversary of the earthquake of 1894 and of the miracle attributed to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Palmi, the city and the congregation decided to annually commemorate the event took place the previous year [6] .
During the celebration of 16 July 1896 the statue of the Madonna del Carmine, together with that of the Child Jesus, was solemnly crowned by the Vatican Chapter [7] .
On 16 November 1944 , the 50th anniversary of the miracle, the Carmelites celebrated the '"year of the golden jubilee" [8] , which consisted of many religious events (such as a Way of the Cross and a prayer vigil) and events civilians, such as the naming of the square in front of the sanctuary with the name "Piazza Carmine on the 50th of the miracle" [8] . On November 16, 1969 , was celebrated the 75th anniversary of the miracle [9] , while in 1994 , was first commemorated the centenary of the event. Within the celebrations of 16 July 1996 , he was reminded of the centenary of the crowning of the statues of the Virgin and Christ Child with a eucharistic celebration, held in the Co-Cathedral town.

Description

The miraculous statue wood of the Madonna del Carmine in Palmi was built towards the end of the eighteenth century , by the sculptor Domenico De Lorenzo . At the same sculptor must always Palmi , the statue of Maria Santissima del Soccorso [10] and the ancient statue of the ' Immaculate Conception [10] , so much so that the same three statues were called by the people "the three sisters ". But this name, going destroyed 30 December 1924 by the statue of the fire [11] , is no longer in use.
The contract for the construction of the statue, including Domenico De Lorenzo and the congregation, was established 26 May 1782 [12] . The main conditions were the material ( wood of lime ) [12] , the height (6 palms) [12] and some aesthetic features of the statue, as the clothes worn by the Madonna and Christ Child , and the inclusion of some cherubs [12] . the sum was paid 70 ducats [12] .

The statue of the Madonna del Carmine recounts the ' iconography typical with which depicts the Virgin of Carmel. The Virgin Mary is depicted sitting on a cloud from which sprout down two angels. A third angel is also sitting on the cloud, while the other two angels at the sides are the same as statuettes autonomous and detached from the main complex. The Madonna wears a dress color pink adorned with a band yellow (same color as the hat) and a belt golden . The sleeves you can see another color dress green , worn under the pink dress. Complete the clothing of the Virgin a mantle blue (with gold stars), which in part falls above the knees, and in part adorns the shoulders.
With his left hand the Virgin shows a scapular while, with his right hand, holding up the figure of Baby Jesus resting on his knee. The effigy of the Child Jesus also shows, with his right hand, a second scapular. Both statues are adorned with a crown of gold since July 16, 1896 , as crowned by the Vatican Chapter in memory of the miracle occurred two years earlier. It should be noted that the statue of the Madonna, in addition to the aforesaid crown is adorned with a ' halo of twelve stars.
With the course of the centuries, the statue has been restored several times, often as a result of such work, have changed the colors of the clothes of the Virgin.
