CHURCH GENAZZANO
Genazzano City (60 km south of Rome), back to the time of the Roman Empire. This place was the scene of celebrations in honor of the gods, some of which were mere pretext for pagan orgies. One of these celebrations will be conducted on 25 April, in honor of the goddess Flora.
After Constantine the Great gave freedom to the Church under the pontificate of Pope San Marcos (336) a first church dedicated to Mary, under the tender invocation of Mother of Good Counsel was built there. Subsequently the Augustinians erected at one end of the city a modest convent.
Over the centuries the importance of the original temple was decaying, until and pretty run of its former prominence only reduced it the name, nice marble bas-relief depicting the Virgin Mother of Good Counsel, and the privilege of be a point of influx of pilgrims who came to ask you, that Mary continued lavishing maternally.
A mid-fourteenth century, the care of the ancient temple to the Order of the Hermits of St. Augustine was entrusted. However, financial difficulties were preventing urgent and long-awaited reform of the temple of the Mother of Good Counsel.

THE GODLY PETRUCCIA
Our Lady wanted to make use of a simple tertiary agustina for a single miracle in the history of the Church.

Petruccia Nocera, a widow since 1436 and no children, spent most of his time to prayer and perform small services at the Church of the Madonna of Good Counsel. It hurt to see the status of the temple, and prayed fervently that could be restored. Finally, she decided to assume the initiative.

All dimensions of the old church would be expanded, rebuilding its structure. But half of the works, Petruccia, which already had 80 years of age, found that the amount offered was not enough for further work, and no one had come forward to help her. So, when their resources run out new walls ironically amounted to little more than a meter off the ground ... So some known poor tertiary began reproached recklessness he had committed, others made fun of her, and even those who were reprendiesen severely in public. All she was content to say, "Do not give my children, so important to this apparent unhappiness, because I assure you that before my death the Blessed Virgin and our holy father Augustine will finish the church begun by me."

On 25 April 1467 it was Saturday. The feast in honor of the Mother of Good Counsel usually wore with great concourse of people. When suddenly, at about 4 pm, were heard the strains of a most agreeable melody, which seemed to come from heaven. Everyone started searching where could come those wonderful sounds. Then, above the roofs and towers of the churches, in the spring sky and poetic Lazio, allowed to see a small white cloud that gave off light rays and came down to the sound of an exceptionally beautiful melody. Gradually the cloud of light down to the same church of the Mother of Good Counsel, which was suspended by the wall of the unfinished chapel. At the same time the bells of the old tower began to ring by themselves, followed immediately by a miraculous unison by all Genazzano steeples. Within seconds the chapel was full of people who, astonished, came to admire the heavenly phenomenon. The little cloud was dissipated, revealing a beautiful object, a painting of Our Lady tenderly bringing her Divine Son in her arms.

Home of the appearance and living is overjoyed to hear the mother of God, really screams: "Miracle! Miracle " . The news spread by Lazio and then to Italy. Fervent crowds began coming to worship that image, miraculously suspended in the air. They began to rain alms, as a providential response to the unwavering confidence of good Petruccia. Their hopes were now carried. Scutari A GENAZZANO
Among the pilgrims to Genazzano were two characters that caused surprise at their clothes and physiognomic traits that identified them as foreigners. One was still young, and the other adult. come to Rome from Albania at the beginning of the year, told a unique story that initially nobody wanted to give credit.

In January of that year 1467 had died and the last great king of the Albanians George Castriota, better known as Scanderbeg. He had given evidence of high heroic fidelity to the Church in the struggle against the Turks that threatened to crush the small Christian nation. From his youth he had taken part in fighting against Muslims, and in one of them, in Croja, then capital of Albania, fragorosamente defeated Sultan himself Amurat II.

Unfortunately the Albanian people had long suffered from the influence of the Byzantine schism, and ranged between adherence and rejection of the Holy See. Thus, to the death of Scanderbeg Albania faithful paid the consequences of prolonged warmth and inconstancy. The Turkish armies, looking free of they called "fulminant Lion War", rammed against Albania and occupied almost entirely.
Only Scutari, which had not yet been conquered, resisted, but his fall was only a matter of time. Then began the exodus to neighboring countries where they could maintain fidelity to the Holy See. Among them was Giorgio and De Sclavis, the two protagonists of this story. They also planned to migrate, but something still retained in Scutari.

It was a small church where an image of Our Lady, mysteriously descended from heaven two hundred years ago was worshiped. Was said to have come from the East, and for the graces granted, the sanctuary had become the main center of pilgrimage in Albania. Prince Scanderbeg himself had visited several times with his victorious troops.

This was the great affliction of Giorgio and De Sclavis: leaving the country in misfortune, leaving her the heavenly gift, the great treasure of Albania. Tears were once the old temple they pray to that holy Mother, in her painful perplexity, that she give them good advice they needed. Well it seemed to be the preserve of Mohammedan fury, but at the same time seek safety in exile to their own souls.
That night the Virgin let them know, in dreams, what I expected from them. Les commanded to prepare everything necessary to leave that ungrateful country which never would. He added that the miraculous fresco was to withdraw from Scutari to escape profanation, and would go to another country to continue there spilling their thanks. Finally, he ordered them to siguiesen image to where it was.

The next morning the two friends were ready and went to the sanctuary. Even without knowing the direction events would take, knelt before the beloved painting. Suddenly they saw, with indescribable emotion, it was beginning to detach from the wall where it had supported since its mysterious coming from the East, and having left their niche, was one hanging in the air, to be enveloped in a white cloud point. However still visible to them through this cloud. Then, out of the temple the image began to depart from Scutari, moving through the air at great height from the ground.

It was moving toward the Adriatic Sea at a speed that allowed the two friends follow. So they walked about 40 km. until you reach the coast. Without stopping its course, the picture left the land and moved over the sea, carrying behind him the faithful Giorgio and De Sclavis, now walking on the waves as did his Divine Master in the lake of Gennesaret.

At night, the mysterious cloud that day kept them safe from the heat of the sun with its beneficent shade, guided by its light. So reached the shores of Italy, and continued following the cloud over mountains, rivers and valleys, until days later sighted the towers and domes of Rome. But, arrived at the gates of the city, the cloud suddenly disappeared.

Then Giorgio De Sclavis and began to wander the city, grieving, wondering from church to church and on the streets, if there had posed a distressed image of Heaven. But did not get any information that could comfort.

It was then that ran through Rome's astonishing news that an image of Our Lady had appeared in the skies of Genazzano. Which was not his joy when, arrived at the place where now lay the miraculous painting, found that it was exactly the same picture ! They prostrate in token of deep veneration and intense affection, praised and thanked the Virgin for the immense favor which had been granted.
Soon it was found that the extraordinary story of two Albanian was absolutely true. The two pilgrims set up permanent residence in the city and never departed from his lady. There he married, putting their lives and their children under the protection of the Mother of Good Counsel.

ROME RESEARCH
When I started coming Roma constant news about all these weird and wonderful events, the Holy Father, Pope Paul II, was a careful study and research was needed. In July of that year, a special committee was established for the study. One of the two bishops who led it was a diocese of Dalmatia and was well acquainted with the venerated miraculous Madonna in Scutari. The records of this research still exist, and have been corroborated by other contemporary reports in the Vatican archives.

Looking at the picture, the commission found itself gave evidence of a miraculous nature. Cool was not painted on canvas or wood, but a thin layer of enamel, porcelain texture, comparable to the thickness of an eggshell. The committee also verified that the fresco was venerated for so long in Scutari had indeed disappeared. The empty space on the wall of the sanctuary, which corresponds exactly to the dimensions of the Madonna of Paradise, is conclusive proof. The mysterious and miraculous transfer was also clearly undeniable. No environment could have separate fresh in its entirety, without damage, the same wall that was painted.

The best evidence, however, it remains to be told. The image of the Madonna back then as well as now, rested without any support or balance. Only a portion of the bottom edge makes contact with a ledge projecting from the wall of the chapel. Members of the commission verified this phenomenon by passing a thin wire around and behind the image from top to bottom.

The report is included meticulous research of 171 miracles, whose explanation was beyond nature. All these findings convinced the pope that, in effect, a similar to that of the House of Loreto translation happened. News of these events spread quickly and soon the image invoked as Our Lady of Good Counsel became an object of perpetual pilgrimage.

Since coming over 500 years ago, the picture has remained stationary in original position. The main church has been rebuilt twice. Pope Leo XIII's enlarged and embellished, and thus rose to the rank of minor basilica.

Many popes have personally honored this miraculous Madonna. To give a few example: Pope Saint Pius V sent a heart of gold as a votive offering. Pope Urban VII personally was on pilgrimage in 1630 to ask for divine help during the plague. Pope Innocent XI was crowned the miraculous image. In 1753 Pope Benedict XIV approved the Confraternity of Our Lady of Good Counsel, and he was its first member. Many other popes followed his example and joined the Brotherhood. As pope, enthroned a beautiful copy of the miraculous image on the altar of the Pauline Chapel in the Vatican. Pope Leo XIII was especially devoted to Our Lady of Good Counsel. Pope Pius XII chose this miraculous Madonna as the patron of his pontificate.

Many saints were also devoted to the Madonna. St. Alphonsus Liguori Genezzano went on pilgrimage in 1746, and repeatedly invoked this Madonna and even had a picture of her in her studio.

During World War II, a bomb through the roof of the basilica and exploded in the sanctuary. The main altar was destroyed; enamel adjacent walls, all covered with paintings and frescoes, was reduced to dust. However, the small image of Our Lady remained perfectly intact and safe peacefully in his miraculous suspension.
