On April 23, 1518, two women and a shepherd, passing by the fresco of the Madonna and child on the old Church of San Biago, saw her eyes move as if alive. Other people saw the same thing the next day. Blind, deaf, and crippled people were cured. Immediately a new church was begun, a masterpiece of Antonio da Sangallo il Vecchio, finished in 1545.
