Worthy of admiration and affection from all Argentani, the sanctuary owes its name to the first "cell" that contained the fresco of the image of the Virgin and Child. Canon Silver Don Leopoldo Francesco Bertoldi in his History of the Madonna della Celletta us that Giampaolo of Fanti said Dainese, who lives in San Biagio, in 1490 to return home with his wife fell with the buggy in the river during a storm. Seeing himself in danger of death invoked the protection of the Virgin promising to build a chapel in her honor. Saved both, they fulfilled the vow and the chapel was immediately called by the people "cell". In 1580 the Public Representatives of Argenta did expand the church because of the great numbers of the faithful and was commissioned to the painter Francesco Balestri image restoration because some criminals they had disfigured his face; on that occasion they were added the patron saints Giacomo and Nicolò. The devotion of the faithful grew especially after the earthquake on March 16 of that year destroyed Argenta and neighboring villages: San Biagio, Boccaleone and Bando. His fury seemed to stop in front of the Sanctuary was unhurt. Despite so many ruins and destruction of walls, towers and houses the victims were very few, so the residents and public authorities, civil and religious, they went in procession to Celletta thanking the Virgin and St. Joseph of saving them and vowing to go there every year on the same day as well as the marble plaque attests still preserved at the entrance of the Sanctuary on the left wall dated May 12, 1669. On May 7, the same year  the church was consecrated by the Archbishop Monsignor put Cocacio and 7 October, with large turnout of people and celebrations, the image was transported to the cell wall from the old to the new temple. This was the date chosen for the annual anniversary of the commemoration of the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Artistic notes . The Municipal Art Gallery of Argenta, housed in the church of San Domenico, retains some paintings from the Sanctuary. Among them it is to remember the sixteenth-century Madonna and Child with Saints Lazarus and Job (1513) attributed to Benvenuto Tisi, called Garofalo, who adorned the altar of St. Lazarus. More recently the painting by Earthquake Argenta Camillo Ricci, a follower of Scarsella, performed after the vote of 1624.Un'altra canvas depicting Christ in a smaller size, in 1600, was donated by the jurist Bondini.

But the work that we can still admire in the first chapel to the left of the main altar is a painting depicting the Flight into Egypt of the Holy Family, a nineteenth century copy of the Ferrarese painter Fei, the original of which is in the Picture Gallery and is of smaller proportions . The work was commissioned as a votive offering after the earthquake of the '600 to Dulauvier French painter, pupil of Guido Reni, proved too expensive, and in 1635 was placed in the ancient chapel dedicated to St. Joseph.

There is no trace of the vault frescoes executed by the Bolognese painter Sante Nucci 1870 and the bell tower after the bombing of April 12, 1945 that spared only the altar of the Madonna. The present building, rebuilt, were replaced the old wooden sculptures of Ortisei modern works, including the large crucifix much revered by the faithful.

Lord ago 'I am your worthy
priest not only in the altar,
but in the life and sacrifice
of myself. Always!
