Santa Maria del Pozzo / Our Lady of the Well - Capurso, Bari, Italy
The town of Capurso (Bari), on the east coast of southern Italy, claims Our Lady of the Well as its patron under the title Madonna del Pozzo. Tradition says that it was on August 30, 1705, that the image of Our Lady sculpted in wood was found in a well. It is now preserved in the Basilica S. Maria del Pozzo, construction on which began in 1770. On May 20, 1852, the image of the Blessed Mother was solemnly crowned. Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the Societá Maria S.S. del Pozzo, dedicated to Madonna del Pozzo and her traditions was established in 1922. On August 30th 1705 is the date on which the priest Don Domenico Tanzella , after recovering from a serious illness that forced him to bed drinking the water of the well of "Santa Maria", descending into the hollow shaft of the Piscino found on the wall that turned noon Byzantine icon of the Holy Virgin. The difficulty of the descent with a ladder candles which were equipped with the Tanzella and three other friends fell into pools of water, but continued to burn after praying the priest decided to remove the image of the Virgin to bring in Capurso and expose to public veneration, but here's another miracle, miraculously painted broke away from the wall of the well and brought his arms. Returning to Don Domenico Capurso exhibited the icon in the soon Tanzella chapel dedicated to the patron saint of St. Lawrence Martyr . Would have been recorded many miracles, among others, to a certain Caterina, crippled for many years, wife of Lorenzo Maffiola. Our Lady would appear in a dream and tell her that if she wanted to heal was to go in the new chapel of Tanzella and would receive grace.
