History

Introduction

On the mount called the Forest, between San Vigilio, Gussago and Cellatica, in 1536 the Virgin and Child appeared to the shepherd deaf-mute Gardone Antonio de 'Antoni. Tradition has it that the commission to administer offers bestowed by the devotees, now found on the site of the apparition, drawn on the ground, the plant of the future temple "in whose midst elevavasi a lily ... on which scattered its rays a star."

The impressive Renaissance building with a central plan, the massive bell tower that makes it look like a fortress, is attributed to the architect Agostino da Brescia Castle. The volumes of the majestic church acquire particular emphasis on due to the geometric simplicity of the facades, which stand out strongly portals and precious stone roses White Botticino. Within five Baroque altars with rich polychrome marbles contain precious wooden icons and paintings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including the famous Madonna and Child (with silky surface illuminated by a star, as from the stories of the apparition), the work of Jerome Romans said Romanino, commissioned in 1536. Shrine of Our Lady of the Star, which until a few years ago the well-known pastor Faustino Negrini practiced exorcisms, it is still a place of lively devotion.

The devotion to Our Lady of the Star

Built as many in the first half of '500, almost fortress to stem the heresies that came down from the north, scattered from Protestantism. The errors concerning the Virgin Mary, and especially her virginity, deeply wounded the filial love of the good people of that time, and we can say that, especially in reaction to these errors, the populations of Gussago, Cellatica and S.Vigilio, united by same common faith and love for the Virgin, settled in place to erect this shrine which marks the borders of the three countries.
As stated, and it is said widely in a booklet on the Sanctuary, published for the care of Benedictine Oblates, the next source of that sanctuary was the apparition of the Virgin May 31, 1536 to a poor herdsman, such as Antonio de Antoni Gardone Val Trompia, which guarding the flock of a landowner from San Vigilio.

The pastor, who recited the Holy Rosary glue crown in hand, aghast and trembling for the apparition, the Virgin enjoined to announce to the community Cellatica, Gussago and will be S.Vigilio of the Madonna in that place to erect a temple in her honor.

Just 24 days later, ie June 24, 1536, the three communities of Cellatica, Gussago and S.Vigilio came together to agree on what to do and agreed redissero a report which states: "Essendochè this year and especially to the divine mercy appeared as affermasi, the Queen of Heaven Lady the Virgin Mary, advocate of sinners, in the outbuildings of these three areas, namely S.Vigilio, Cellatica and Gussago over a certain mountain where it is said the wood, etc. .. ".

In that session were elected people from the three communities to administer the generous donations left in the place of the apparitions by the faithful who flocked. On June 23, 1536, the Vicar General of Brescia authorized populations Cellatica and S.Vigilio to erect the sanctuary. We do not believe that the absence of Gussago Vicariale in the decree should be ascribed to the intrigues of turf or untimely zeal of pastors intriguing, but only to the fact that according to reports of Bishop Fe, the provost at the time, Paterio from Bornato not already resided in Gussago but in Rome, as an officer of the Papal Curia.

Instead, the provost said he could be heard in person to Rome, where Pope Paul III with his Bull of October 10, 1536 (the same year), authorized the erection of the Sanctuary, establishing the 'Jus patronage in the three municipalities, urging the construction and preserve for a priest who was to take them into custody. On March 25, 1537, four representatives of the three municipalities were assembled in the town hall of Gussago close to the square of San Lorenzo, and took counsel how concerned the erection of the Sanctuary. They bought the first fund by a certain Bonomo Bonomi "quondam Gasparino." They bought also the source "Fontanelle" under Camaldoli, and by pipeline floors, they brought the water since the "Star" for the construction of the temple. On 2 June the same year they laid the first stone in 1537, and two years of work in the sanctuary was already functioning, as it is today, no longer get the complete exterior finish. There is no documentary evidence of the architect of the factory.

The interior has three naves with barrel vaults, it is very unusual for proportion and unity in even severe disposition of a Greek cross. Inside, there is the famous painting by Romanino depicting the Madonna della Stella in addition to other sixteenth-century works (the Nativity of Mary and 'Apparition to Deaf and dumb) and paintings by Pietro Marone (the Portiuncula and St. Francis) and Antonio Gandino (the bezel of the Assumption, the paintings of the Madonna and Child with St. John and Patrons of the three municipalities). Very valuable is the chapel of St. Charles Borromeo containing paintings by Horace Cossali. Outside was a statue of Pope Paul VI as particularly devoted to Our Lady of the Star.

The apparition of the Madonna della Stella

On 31 May 1536 the Blessed Virgin appeared to Antonio de 'Antoni, a poor deaf-mute shepherd of Gardone Val Trompia. The man, while he was tending the flock of a landowner of San Vigilio, piously recite the Holy Rosary; Suddenly, before his eyes shone a more intense light of the sun, in the middle of what appeared to Mary with baby Jesus in her arms. He had simple clothes, almost commoner, and said gently to the pastor to invite the inhabitants of the surrounding villages to dedicate a temple in that place. In front of the man's hesitation, Mary encouraged him, assuring him that she herself would have confirmed your request with miracles and graces. And the first of these miracles was the repurchase of the word poor Antonio.

The people ran on the site of numerous and, surprisingly, found the clearing of the hill a beautiful design of the foundations of a church. In the middle of the design was a flowered lily of rare beauty, illuminated by the rays of a star perpendicular to it above. Pope Paul III granted the building of the sanctuary, on which work began in 1537 and ended in 1539.
