Madonna dell'Elemosina (Our Lady of Mercy), Biancavilla, Catania, Sicily, Italy
Commemorated on Fourth Sunday of August, October 4
According to tradition, after setting up camp, a small group of exiles journeying to Palermo hung the sacred icon on a fig tree. In the morning, when they were to resume the journey, the exiles found it inextricably tangled in the branches of the fig tree, grown overnight. The miraculous event was interpreted as the will of the Mother of God to stay in that place, where the small group could find a new home. Count Gian Tommaso Moncada, lord of the place, learning of the occurrence, gave the Greek-Albanian colony permission to stay.
Several miracles including stopping a draught and a plague followed.
A solemn procession is on October 4th, the festivities honor patrons San Placido and San Zeno. After Mass, the icon goes in procession through the streets of the historic town center.
History
Devotion to Our Lady dell'ìElemosina in Pallet has its roots in the founding of the city itself. In 1482, following the victory of the Muslim Turks in the Greek-Albanian land, a colony of refugees, from the city of Shkodra and led by Cesare De Masi, landed in Sicily, bringing with him his most precious treasure: the Byzantine icon the Mother of God "Eleusa" (the Merciful), a relic of the martyr soldier of Arabia, Zeno, and a wooden cross of oriental style.
The final destination of the small group of exiles was Palermo, where they expected to join the rest of their countrymen in the current Piana degli Albanesi. During their journey they stopped exiles about 30 km from Catania, in a field called "Callicari", owned by the Counts of Moncada Adernò.
Here, according to tradition, after planting the camp, hung the sacred icon of a fig tree. In the morning, when to resume the journey, the exiles found their icon entirely tangled in the branches of the fig tree, grown overnight, to the point that it was not possible to disentangle them. The miraculous event was interpreted as the clear will of the Mother of God who had led them on the journey, to stay in that place, where the small group could find a new home. So it was that the Count Gian Tommaso Moncada, lord of the place, hit of the occurrence, hospitality granted to the colony greek-Albanian.
Since then, thanks to the Virgin Mary bestowed on the people and the land have followed abundant. A popular tradition based on a number of testimonies and evidence, has it that every time that the land of Pallet Town was afflicted with a particular drought or storms so violent that may threaten crops, was the timely intervention of the Blessed Virgin. In the drought of 1876, against the predictions of many, the sacred image was carried in procession in fair weather; as soon as he came to the church of St. Ursula, poured such a wave of rain, all having to repair the church for several hours. A similar incident happened again in May of 1948, the second day of a Triduum in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, according to the direct testimony of the Provost Gaetano Messina.
In 1576 the plague made great massacres in Sicily, and the nearby town of Paternò had 70 victims, while the people of Pallet Town, thanks to the prayers of the faithful, he was entirely free.
In continuous eruptions of Etna, whose slopes lies the town, nothing is ever had to suffer; so in 1536 and in 1603; and even in the scariest of 1669, when thirteen Etna villages were destroyed.
The eruption of 1879 was even directed towards Pallet Town! I Biancavilla, however, trusting firmly in their Mother, the anguished pleas turned until the lava had not diverted its course "against all the laws of nature and the predictions of science" in the words of the illustrious volcanologist at the University of Catania, the prof. Silvestri.
Pallet remained unharmed in the frequent earthquakes: a violent shock occurred in 1693, causing many casualties in the entire eastern Sicily (16,000 victims in Catania, 4000 in Syracuse, etc.) and especially in neighboring countries in Pallet Town, which remained unscathed.
Since March 2, 1883, for several months there were many earthquakes daily without interruption, so as to compel the inhabitants to seek refuge outside the town, in makeshift huts. The fervent prayers of the faithful obtained from the Blessed Virgin Mary that no house collapsed and that there were no casualties.
Another miracle is said June 30, 1942, when a terrible earthquake and volcanic eruption threatened the city again; the lava coming down live on Pallet; the people, animated by a lively faith, brought in procession the image on the front of the lava, and with wonder, this came to a halt at 21 of July 2, the day dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie.
The Holy Mother was particularly close to his faithful even during the agonizing days spent during the Anglo-American landing in Sicily in July 1943 Pallet Town, in the midst of the destruction of houses, palaces, churches, monuments, occurred elsewhere, it seemed invariably destined to the same fate as the German troops, associated with motorized units of the Italian army, after the retreat from the Plain of Catania and Enna, I had placed the command. The site of Pallet Town was judged very favorable to the defense because naturally fortified by the high lava cliff, cut-to-peak and extended, as a band insurmountable, at noon from the town, up to the limit of Adranos. The site of Pallet Town, unfavorable to the allies, led them to place their artillery on the ridges in front Centuripe and Regalbuto, in order to dislodge the Germans, avoiding the possible risks of ambushes of a direct confrontation on the field.
The Germans on their side had placed their artillery in the surrounding area and on the main square waiting for the impact. The inhabitants, sad and silent, dragging a few supplies and some clothing, s'inerpicarono on the slopes of Etna, with little faith in the heart of finding what they had left in the country. The only was confidence in the Blessed Virgin Mary, left alone to guard the place of His blessing; many promises were expressing to his lips the faint hope of finding it in the safety desired.
Unexpectedly, the Germans retreated, resolving to organize the defense over Bronte, also to give ease to the army en route to cross the Strait of Messina. In this way Pallet, not only was miraculously unharmed, but there was no looting the homes of its inhabitants. Only four or five houses were destroyed. Occupied Pallet August 7, 1943, the military they found as many as 52 unexploded bombs in and around the town. The neighboring countries, Adrano, S. Maria di Licodia and Paterno, had incalculable damage.
The Beautiful Mother dell'Elemosina
The icon measures 67 × 85 cm. and is painted with egg tempera on wood of cedar, a technique that allows to date the icon at the beginning of the fifteenth century. The picture is clear greek-byzantine style, and suffers greatly for the lower middle part of the influence of well-known icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Perpetual Help, which, with the exception of some color difference, is absolutely identical. Even though barely visible icon brings the typical three-star Marian iconography and symbol of divinity.
On solemnities the icon is covered by a "riza" (or manta) in silver, gold and precious stones, which enhances the features and decorations of late Baroque style. Dela on the head of the Madonna and Child, on such occasions, you can see the crowns in gold and precious fruit of the votive offerings of Biancavilla to commemorate the Coronation of the Virgin 3 October 1948 and the Child 26 August 1961 The riza is was rebuilt in 1978 by the Venetian artist Franco Mazzocchi on the model of the original that was stolen in February of the same year.
The title "Mater Elemosinae" also translates the greek "Eleusa" (merciful, compassionate, who has compassion), and expresses a particular attribute of Mary Mother of Mercy. This name was first given by S. Oddone (942 +) to celebrate the Virgin has given birth to Jesus Christ, who is Mercy visible the invisible God merciful: therefore Mary, as the Mother of Christ, is also the Mother of Mercy, offering through its arms for the salvation of all men and intercedes powerfully as divine administrator of Thanks. This trust in the powerful intercession of the Virgin expresses itself in the celebration of her beauty; as she herself said, when questioned: "I'm so beautiful because I love you so much." In Mary, the true and the good are offered to contemplation and from their symbiosis comes the fun part. Mary, in fact, for the Sicilians, even before "Santa" is "Bella", so he continues to invoke the common people with the title of "Bedda Matri" in particular in Pallet "Bedda Matri 'in Limousin" (The Beautiful Mother dell'Elemosina).
The particular representation of the sense organs (eyes without shimmer, strange shapes of ears, thin nose and long, small nostrils, mouth always closed), expressing the deafness to the events of the world, a detachment from all excitement. The face is transfigured, eternal, it belongs to the spiritual world; beauty is spiritual purity. The clothes follow the body in perfect logic, but do not show the real and concrete material; the rhythm of the folds, the color and the distribution of light and shade are subject to the laws of harmony and balance, and economy of the icon expressing "the habit of incorruptibility."
Celebrations in honor of Maria SS. dell'Elemosina
Around the mid-800, the Congregation for Divine Worship decreed that this feast be celebrated on August 23, or on Sundays, "the nfra octavam." Consolidated in this way the tradition of celebrating the Madonna dell'Elemosina in 'last Sunday of August (formerly celebrated on Easter Monday or Angel).
"The Great Summer Festival" is celebrated annually and is characterized by a novena of preparation, which is officiated by a preacher Father, punctuated by cannon shots every day at noon invite everyone to a quick stop to pray the Angelus. In these nine days are also recite the ancient prayer (the Chaplet and the Supplication) composed by Vincenzo Motta Provost. Inside the novena, also, we celebrate the Triduum a more intense preparation, at the last three days preceding the last Sunday: Thursday is celebrated on the day of the Eucharist, with the exposure of the SS. Sacramento and the short procession in the evening, in the squares and Collegiate Rome; On Friday, the meditation on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary; Saturday preceding the Great Festival is dedicated to the devotion of the town, with the act of consecration of the new members of the "Maria SS. Alms "and the renewal of the accession of all the devotees. Friday: Summer Feast of Santa Maria dell'Elemosina, after the Holy Mass, celebrtata at the Basilica Shrine, held the procession with the venerated image of Our Lady. On his return, after a fireworks display, reposition in the Chapel of the Holy Icon-custody and concluding prayer.
Another celebration is solemn has 4 October, in the context of the patron saint festivities in honor of San Placido and San Zeno. On that day, at the end of the Mass and of the acts of homage rendered by the people, the icon is gone in solemn procession through the streets of the historic center sull'artistico fercolo major, made a vow by biancavillesil, for the narrow escape from earthquake of 1883.
On October 10, we celebrate the liturgical feast, as provided by the Congregation for the rites.
In addition, on May 31, conmclusione in the month of Mary, the Holy Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary dwell'Elemosina is carried in procession through the streets and Collegiate Rome, in front of the Basilica Shrine, visited in the shoulder by women, in a very intimate and devoted.
The popular hymn to Our Lady dell'Elemosina
There are several musical tributes that tradition Biancavilla sang over time in honor of its patron saint.
The most popular is the hymn composed in 1954 by Mons. Antonino Distefano (1898-1987) and music by Mons. Chisari Joshua.
Mother of Love, Mother of the Lord,
that looks mild and show us your Son,
if you were driving one day of our fathers
light and comfort even ask you.
Oh Queen, Mother of our God, lift us to the heart there remains only you.
Mother dell'Elemosina, Renew our love, Mother dell'Elemosina, Renew Jesus!
Sad is the life and infinite darkness
Without the light that comes from heaven:
the whole earth is a dark veil
without the light of santa fe '.
Oh Regina ...
Mother of Love, Mother of the Lord
You gave man the hope that,
if bitter is the world passeth and crying,
turn your to look upon those who weep there!
Oh Regina ...
In prayer the soul that hopes,
while in exile, is her smile;
let us dream, Mother, Paradise,
show to those who weeps your Son Jesus.
Oh Regina ...
Mother of Love, Mother of the Lord,
divine flame of fiery ardor,
Think of it as our heart is cold,
that alone is crazy for vanity.
Oh Regina ...
You who Love you squeeze him to the heart,
donalo us your holy Son:
allor life will love the one hand,
will be a prelude to eternity.
Oh Regina ...
Mother of Love, Mother of the Lord,
hears our cry of prayer:
if quivers hatred and the air darkens,
Look at your children and we protect you!
Oh Regina ...
You are our Mother, You trust us,
Star of love lost soul,
life, our sweetness, endless hope ...
Who on earth loves you, will love you there.
Oh Regina ...
The new Hymn to the Virgin
Composed for the occasion of the 10th anniversary, the new Hymn to the Virgin dell'Elemosina fits into the long trail of those produced in the centuries to celebrate and venerate the Mother of God of Mercy. The latter hymn, "Hail Mother of Love", performed for the first time October 4, 2011 on the occasion of the patronal feast of the Virgin, was composed for the part of the text written by "Maria SS. dell'Elemosina ", taking account of the most beautiful prayers to Our Lady dell'Elemosina resulting from the devout Marian tradition Biancavilla. The music was made for two versions: the first composed by Maestro Paolo Biagio Cipolla, former organist of the Basilica Metropolitana di Catania, the second by Maestro Alessandro La Ciacera, titular organist of the Cathedral of Milan.
