The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico is the seat of the Archdiocese of San Juan. It is located on Calle del Cristo in Old San Juan. It was built in 1521 , destroyed by a storm , and then rebuilt in 1529.
History
The church was named Minor Basilica by Pope Paul VI on January 25th of 1978 , at the request of Cardinal Luis Aponte Martínez , Archbishop of San Juan.
It contains the remains of explorer and conquistador Juan Ponce de León , and the martyr St. Pius . Contains some relics such as ornaments and garments worn by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Puerto Rico in 1984 . It also contains an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe with the title "Patroness of Mexico and Empress of the Americas".
The Cathedral is also the National Shrine of Our Lady of Divine Providence , Patroness of Puerto Rico. It is the oldest church in the country, and the second oldest in America , after the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor in Santo Domingo.
