Madonna dell'Apparizione (Our Lady of the Apparition), Pellestrina, Italy

Commemorated on August 4
Madonna dell'Apparizione (Our Lady of the Apparition), Pellestrina, Italy
On Tuesday, August 4, 1716, the feast of St. Dominic, about six o'clock in the morning a guy named John Di Pasquale Scarpa said Muto, from the age of about 14 and a half years, while on his way to the parish church of All Saints, passing the temple of Saints Vito and Modesto, which also kept an old painting of the Madonna del Carmine, he saw a strange woman, low in stature, rather old, standing on the right side of the church. The "Lady" wore a blue dress, embroidered red star, that reached down to his feet and had his head covered by a white veil that came under his arms, his face was pale, his cheeks white, the look straightforward without ornaments of any kind, worried look.

The church was closed and the woman was beside him: he motioned with his hand that the boy approached because he had to say something:

"Come here fio - he said - it goes' from Piovan and dams that face celebrar masses for the souls in Purgatory, blood volume if you win, and portime the answer, and to tel you why you digo x and worthy."
And with the right hand, as if to reassure and confirm the reality of the vision, touched his left wrist, holding him fondly for a moment. The detailed description, refer directly to the boy, shows how the young man was impressed that image, "looked like - still remembers Natalino - the mother of my teacher (the priest Antonio de Ambrosi), especially in the eyes, but it was certainly not her, because of short stature and dressed differently. " Natalino was alone and was on his way to the church of All Saints to accompany the rite administration of Communion to three sick: no one else but him could have seen that woman.

The war against the Turks

It was the period of the war against the Turks, who in those days seemed to have the better of the Venetian fleet and allies in Hungary.

In December of 1714 the Ottoman grand vizier called the Bailo of Constantinople Andrea Memmo to inform that due to some recent incidents in Montenegro and the interception of a Turkish ship in the Adriatic, his lord had decided to declare war. The Morea was recaptured within a few months. It soon became clear that the stakes was the intention of the Turks, much higher: an attack on Venice itself.

The danger was great. The Senate ordered them to remain always open all the shrines of the Republic and exhorted the people to prayer. In fact, the Turks made their way to the fortress that was regarded as the true port of the Adriatic: Corfu. If the Turks had conquered Venice would not have that little hope remained. Corfu was then a key decisive of the long war against the Turks. The grand vizier sent, in the first months of 1716, compared to Corfu an army of thirty thousand men, without a doubt superior to the Venetian forces. In defense of the island Venice could rely on the ability of one of the smartest captains of the time, Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg.

The siege lasted throughout the first part of the summer 1716 until the Turks came the news of the defeat of Petrovaradin by the legendary Prince Eugene of Savoy.

The Battle of Petrovaradin took place on August 5, 1716, the day after an unknown woman had appeared to a boy of fourteen Pellestrina and told to say Masses for the souls of the dead, "blood volume if you win." The coincidence is awesome! And the fortress of Petrovaradin was a real cornerstone for the recapture of Belgrade and the recovery area of western influence in this part of the Balkans. Currently Petrovaradino is a suburb of the big city of Novi Sad in Serbia and there is still a fortress which was the object of the contest was won by Eugene of Savoy.

 Petrovaradin

The news of the defeat of Petrovaradin pushed the commander turkish dell'esercita Corfu to risk everything for everyone. In fact, on the night of 18 August, the Turks launched their final attack. Schulenburg ran for cover by mobilizing all the forces. But after six hours the fight was still uncertain and no one could have the upper hand. Then Sculenburg had the stroke of genius: he decided to surprise a sortie and 800 pikemen came out and attacked by a small postern behind a wing turkish army. The Turks saw themselves caught behind and, fearing to be taken captive, he gave a stampede.

The next night an unexpected help came literally from the sky to the Venetians: a terrible storm devastated the field turkish and many ships, broke its moorings, went to smash one over the other. At dawn, the Turks decided to remove the remaining field and leave the island "where he reigned, they said, hostile gods."

The news spread

Natalino immediately tried to get rid of that strange and overwhelming secret, trying to communicate to Don Angelo Busetto, the chaplain who walked several steps ahead in that August morning, he also directed the parish church, but, raggiuntolo race, he could not speak to him . Something prevented him, as a gust of wind that closed the mouth, as he felt a sort of numbness with slight teasing on the cheek and jaw - so narrates directly Natalino, deposing the process.

Come to the parish church to the parish priest Don Paolo told all Zennaro, who was amazed by the detailed narrative and, at first hesitant on the value of the event and it raises questions as to the boy and make him repeat the story several times, to calm the young man made Finally, mention that you understand and recommended Natalino also meant that the woman - whoever she was - she had fulfilled its task.

Back home, the boy recounted the incident to his mother first, and then to other women and that the interrogators wanted to know the miracle. Natalino ultimately chose not to tell anything to anyone, got tired - he admits himself - having to repeat the same thing to many people curious. He then went to school thinking that everything would finally be over. Natalino, satisfied with the mission accomplished, now he was about to perform his duties in assisting the rite of the distribution of Communion to the sick, thinking that along the way, which would lead again next to the church of St. Vitus, could confirm the woman - even if it was - it had fulfilled its mandate. Arrived near the church he saw the woman who had spoken to him just before but, once again, he felt a gust of wind on the cheek and ear.

Meanwhile, it was learned that a woman, such Maritta Furlana, had already begun to collect donations to fulfill the heavenly invitation to celebrate Masses for the souls in Purgatory, as requested by the mysterious Lady. A classmate suggested Natalino to go along with that woman willing to help. They managed to pick up a nice nest egg, and without even count them, brought the money to the parish priest: it was 17 pounds and a half, he assured Don Paolo in his testimony.

The image of Our Lady moves his eyes

Meanwhile, two women - one bore the name of Laura - avvicinatesi the door still locked in the temple, in whose churchyard had occurred vision, who cried through the keyhole of the lock had caught a glimpse of the ancient image of the Madonna del Carmine move their eyes.

Natalino, who was standing beside him, he could see the miracle asserted by those women, but with him there were many people who had heard of the phenomenon, and many people came to see groped for the door.
The young people also between Natalino met the godfather Fisolo Bara, who claimed you were definitely not give credence to those rumors on eye movement, but he also wanted to satisfy their curiosity. As he approached the door, looking through the keyhole, he had to admit the other hand, he, the most skeptical, that something extraordinary had occurred. "Now I think - he said - because I have seen." This one particular miracle introduces a whole new element in the history of the Apparition of the Virgin to Pellestrina. Enters the scene in fact the "picture of the Madonna."

All day - in quell'assolato AUG 4 - was a bustle of onlookers and pilgrims who came to see the place of the extraordinary celestial event, the site of the apparition and the image of the Madonna kept in the church. who meanwhile had been opened to the large crowd of the faithful. Just on the move, on the opening and closing of the eyes, they had to record several testimonies. In particular, if retain other of that day.

In fact passed by the lagoon around 16:00 some public officials who were carrying out an inspection to heavy boat San Pietro in Volta and Malamocco, and then at the Castello di Chioggia and to Brontolo. They were in the militia officer Antonio Pretti, Superintendent of Artillery of the superintendency in the Lidi, Bartholomew Erizzo, with Mr. Biron, Major of the bombers and the waiter Pretti, James Ferro. As the same Pretti had to lay down the following year at the Curia Bishop of Brescia (the city where he then lived) at the request of the Curia of Chioggia, the three, arrived at the church of St. Vitus, they saw a large crowd and asked the reason for so much hustle and bustle. Sought explanation to some boatmen and fishermen, Pretti grumbled against what he considered gullibility of the populace. But did however stop and moor the boat. The superintendent came in, and, driven by the recollection that inspired that place, he began to pray. Then he began to see that picture of the Madonna painted on wood with open eyes with her Child, now shut the right eye, and so it was with the left eye, which was closed but only half. The others who had come with him were witnesses of the extraordinary fact. All this, in detail, the canonical Pretti said in the interrogation of 16 February 1717.

It also told how extraordinary this event changed his life for the better.

But many other locals were able to admire the miracle. Woman Rosada, Floria Busetto Black and Magdalene, but also many men who previously had declared in disbelief: the shopkeeper Vianello Peter, the fisherman Domenico Scarpa, Domenico Vianello. From the lagoon were also other joints: a James Renier of Chioggia, Vincenzo Boscolo said Tetozzo.

In the evening, at about 23, the parish priest Fr Paul Zennaro she went to the church. Upon arrival of the parish priest, the people who thronged the church still pausing in prayer, began to come out, but more than anyone could not help but turn to Don Paul to narrate the extraordinary events which he had witnessed.

It was a truly memorable day for the Island: Pellestrina since then always remember that 4 August with great solemnity, as a decisive date for their faith and their own history.
