In 1878, 20 years after the apparitions at Lourdes, the parish priest of Qrendi on Malta's south coast started a Confraternity of Our Lady of Lourdes there and commissioned Maltese sculptor Carlo Darmanin to make a statue for a Lourdes chapel in the town church. On the first Sunday in July (or sometimes the last Sunday in June), after solemn high mass and vespers, the statue processes through the town, accompanied by the Qrendi Lourdes Band Club and musicians from neighboring towns. As in many Maltese communities, the Lourdes Band Club maintains a fireworks factory to supply the celebration.
